THE HISTORY OF ROSATI ICE
Now over 100+ years in business, we pride ourselves in being THE original Italian Ice company in the United States. In 1912 Founder Sam Rosati, a man of humble beginnings, started a business in Philadelphia making Italian ices cranked by hand in the basement of his West Philadelphia home. S.R. Rosati's first flavor was Lemon Ice. Sam knew from the start that it would take more than water and flavor to create great Italian ices and he soon became known as "the king of water ice", selling his popular ices from horse-drawn wagons throughout the city and at the Jersey shore. In the mid 50's, the company moved to its current location in Clifton Heights, PA when the business was handed down to Sam Rosati's daughter and son-in-law. Rosemarie and Jim Salamone continued to expand S.R. Rosati as it became the leader in its category for the Tri-State marketplace in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Rosati was the first to sell Italian ices in Dixie cups in the 1960's, later changing to clear plastic cups so customers could see the product they were enjoying.
In 1997 the company was sold to Dave Schumacher, Jim and Rosemarie's son-in-law and Rich Trotter, Rosati's current owner and President. Under this leadership, our company's goal to be a national brand was realized with expansion throughout the continental United States and six neighboring countries.
As school lunch programs and nutritional policies have evolved, Rosati has created a plethora of seasonal offerings throughout the school year for districts around the country. Rosati's innovative recipe allows schools to use their ice cups as fruit replacements on the menu in school cafeterias. This makes it fun for kids to fulfill the daily fruit requirement.
In recent years Rosati Ice has focused on the growing Hispanic market with additional products and flavors, including the new 'Mangoneada' which features mango ice accented with a chili pepper sauce flavor. In addition, Rosati has turned its attention to developing all natural products to include natural color, flavors and natural sugar. Our presence in the retail market sales channel is ever growing. Today the original italian ice company continues to expand aross the country as we bring our quality recipes, flavors and social marketing ideas to kids of all ages as they enjoy their favorite Rosati ice treats in scoop shops, food markets, schools, festivals and anywhere the happy sounds of a ding-a-ling truck can be heard.
